How can better data and decision-support tools help us address future water challenges?
As part of the PCP WISE project, Hans van Leeuwen, PCP WISE Scientific Leader, visited Klimatorium in Lemvig, Denmark, to explore local water-related challenges and the needs of future users in Use Case Area 5.
The visit provided an opportunity to connect local experience with the development of innovative soil-water-vegetation solutions. Discussions addressed key challenges such as groundwater management, drought, flooding and land use, highlighting the need for improved scenario analysis and long-term forecasting to support water management and planning.
PCP WISE is currently in its second year, with three European consortia developing competing solutions that integrate satellite-based Earth observation data with existing data sources. The ambition is to deliver decision-support tools that can support both emergency response and long-term planning, helping public authorities make better-informed water management decisions.
By bringing local stakeholders’ perspectives into the project, the visit helped identify relevant needs and prepare the Lemvig use case for engagement with the competing consortia. It also contributed to discussions on how PCP WISE can create lasting value beyond the project period, particularly through future implementation, ownership and collaboration.
Connecting real-world challenges with innovative data-driven solutions is an important step towards strengthening Europe’s capacity to manage water resources and build climate resilience.
