On 10 September 2026, PCP WISE was represented at the European Meteorological Society (EMS) Annual Meeting 2026 in Utrecht, the Netherlands, with a poster exploring how Earth-observation-based climate services can be co-produced to respond to real-world needs and strengthen water resilience.
The poster, “Co-producing demand-driven EO-based climate services for water resilience: insights from the PCP WISE initiative”, was presented by our colleague Antonia Matthies, as part of the session “Values, Benefits, and Uptake of Climate Services: Co-Creation and Societal Impact.” The poster builds on the abstract submitted for the EMS Annual Meeting 2026, and co-authored by Antonia Matthies, Hans van Leeuwen, Mélissa Campagno, Anastasia Dagla and Sofiane Bari, highlighting PCP WISE’s approach to co-producing demand-driven, Earth Observation-based climate services for water resilience.
The EMS Annual Meeting 2026, held from 6 to 11 September under the theme “Delta Climate in Europe: weather, water, and warnings,” brought together experts from the meteorological, climatological and water-management communities to discuss how climate knowledge and services can better support society in a changing climate.
From available data to demand-driven services
The PCP WISE poster highlighted a central principle of the project: climate and Earth observation services need to be developed around actual user needs if they are to generate value and ultimately be adopted in operational decision-making.
Drawing on the PCP WISE approach, the poster explored how Earth-observation-based services combining information on soil, water and vegetation (SWV) can be co-produced with end users and public buyers. This demand-driven approach is at the heart of PCP WISE, which aims to move innovative water intelligence solutions closer to operational use and support more climate-resilient water management across Europe.
The poster also provided an opportunity to discuss how co-creation and user engagement can contribute to the uptake and societal impact of climate services.
Connecting PCP WISE with the Copernicus community
The EMS Annual Meeting provided particularly valuable opportunities to exchange with researchers, climate-service providers and other stakeholders working on the development and uptake of Earth observation and climate information.
During the event, Antonia had several interesting discussions on the co-creation of Copernicus services, including how users can be more closely involved in shaping services so that they respond to concrete operational challenges and requirements.
These exchanges reinforced the relevance of PCP WISE’s approach: bringing together public buyers, users, technology providers and other stakeholders can help bridge the gap between available Earth observation capabilities and the services that water managers actually need.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of continuing to connect initiatives such as PCP WISE with the wider European climate-service and Earth observation ecosystem, creating opportunities to exchange experience and identify pathways towards broader uptake and replication.
